What is a “data scientist”, anyway? Well, it’s “data” and “scientist”:

Data: “Only the data are real”. Unfortunately, most data are extremely unwieldy. Drawing correct conclusions from data requires a sharp analytical mind, a deep understanding of the fundamentals of statistics, and a broad toolbox of statistical and machine learning techniques. It also requires the engineering skill to wrangle data from various sources and to implement computationally-challenging algorithms over large data sets.

Scientist: A scientist practices the scientific method: formulating hypothesis, testing them, and drawing inspiration for new hypothesis from the results. This requires the scientist to use both sides of her brain in tandem, creatively coming up with useful hypotheses and analytically testing, rejecting, revising and expanding them in a continual interplay. A great scientist doesn’t simply analyze data to answer a question. A great scientist finds the incredibly valuable questions no one has considered.

We’re looking for a brilliant individual to form the cornerstone of our data science team. Our process gives you full ownership over the projects you tackle: so dream big, then execute well.
You’ll be given the latitude to survey Thumbtack as a business, identify key opportunities, and use any and all available data to draw actionable conclusions that will guide the direction of the company.

Responsibilities
- You’ll design, implement and launch experiments to test your hypotheses
- You’ll identify and implement metrics that align with company goals
- You’ll contribute to our Python codebase and perform analyses in R or another statistics tool of your choice
- You’ll advise coworkers on the (mis)use of statistics to understand data

Example projects
- Which markets in our ecosystem are most healthy? Which are least healthy and how can we improve them?
- Are service providers becoming more or less engaged with Thumbtack over time? What’s driving these changes?
- Which consumers are most delighted by their Thumbtack experience? What drives the differences and how can we best improve the experience for our users?
- Are some service providers consistently under- or over-charging for their services? How does that affect consumer behavior? Could we offer advice to help them improve their businesses?

About you
- You’re proficient with advanced statistical analysis and machine learning techniques in an environment/tool/language of your choice (we use R and Python/Pandas currently).
- You’re comfortable writing efficient code to handle large data sets (on a single machine).
- You have a deep understanding of probability and statistics and know how to avoid common statistical traps.
- You have the analytical chops to break down big, open-ended problems into manageable pieces, then attack the pieces from a variety of angles, all without losing sight of the bigger picture.
- You’re comfortable dealing with a large, complex code base (we use Python).
- You express yourself clearly and concisely in written and verbal discussion of complex problems.

The Role:
·         This position supports the Charles River Investment Management System, Eagle Pace, Star and other trading and investment solutions

What we are looking for:
 ·         We are looking for technical aptitude….reading stored procedures, creating and run SQL queries, troubleshooting batch cycle issues and contributing to hardware issues
·         Technical aptitude should be a primary requirement for this role with a secondary requirement of business knowledge.  Experience with a trading system and/or investment accounting system would be useful.
·         If you have experience in Charles River or Eagle Investments Systems that is a plus, but not required
·         Charles River Web admin and systems admin, experience is a plus
·         This role is on the technology side, but we are looking for  good business aptitude
·         Good understanding of the investment management industry
·         A good technical background, but you do not need to write code   
·         Business Process Analysis Tools

Our client seeks a Director of Research to be based in Minneapolis, MN.
This is a new position that will help support the company’s investment products and new product development. This is a very senior role and the title will likely change to reflect that.

About the Company:
Our client is an established firm that has been in business for over 30 years. They are well known in the institutional investment management marketplace. By partnering with our client, institutional clients can expect to increase portfolio performance and enhance risk management capabilities.

The Role:
The Director of Research is responsible for leading all analysis and quantitative modeling to support the company’s investment products and new product development.

They will be mapping out how research should be done. This person will help develop a more organized process to take advantage of the investment professionals already on staff.

Our client is looking for research based on fundamental investment constructs that is rigorous and at the same time more practical (daily use).

They will perform modeling and back testing.

What we are looking for:
Master’s degree (a Ph.D.’s would be great but not necessary) in Finance, Economics, Statistics or Mathematics
Plus 5+ years of work experience in the Investment industry

Summary:
Growing hedge fund seeks a junior-level Portfolio Analyst with 2-4 years of experience and strong SQL skills to step into a role focused on data mining/report building/analytics who will learn the company’s investment/reporting processes, then work in support of portfolio management/risk management/clients/prospective clients

Responsibilities:
Prepare a large number of ad hoc and monthly reports and participate in the research/design/creation of new reports as needed using SQL Server/Reporting Services/Excel/other tools

Requirements:
